A native of Ohio, he joined
the Spiritans in 1989, and worked in Duquesne
University's Campus Ministry while earning his
bachelor’s degree in philosophy and psychology.
Fr. Hickey is well known for his work in the classroom
and in the mission field with young adults. While
working in Campus Ministry from 1989-94, he led
international and domestic missions trips focused
on raising awareness of peace and justice issues.
Following graduate studies at
the Catholic Theological Union, Fr. Hickey was
assigned to the Spiritan province in Puerto Rico,
where he helped young Catholics develop plans
to actively live out the Gospel by making a difference
in the lives of the poor. He also served in a
Puerto Rican AIDS Hospice, where he was a companion
and a counselor to patients living out their final
days. Upon returning to Pittsburgh, he rejoined
the Campus Ministry staff in 2000. Prior to his
appointment as executive director of Mission and
Identity, he was the Vocation Director for the
US East Province of the Congregation of the Holy
Spirit.
